‘To keep one’s eye on the sail’ – Netherlandish Proverb.
The profile image of this website, and the name of this blog itself, is taken from Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Netherlandish Proverbs. It means simply to be wary and pay attention. This painting seemed to follow me for many years and has always been an interest of mine. I’ve adopted this image and proverb as a suitable little icon for myself.
This is a personal blog that will follow my research, any side-projects I am working on, and my general interests. I hope you explore and enjoy.
About Me
My name is John Angus Macaulay. I’m a doctoral candidate and historian at the University of Oxford. From Toronto Canada, I moved to the UK to undertake my undergraduate studies at the University of St Andrews completing my studies in 2020.
My research is particularly focused on medieval culture and religion, the history of the book, and the medieval environment, largely in the context of the pre-Viking insular world and late antique Europe.
